Stitching Resolution 2021/PHDs

These two coincide.

I have never participated in a Blog Hop before and I'm not a writer but Carla at Creatin in the Sticks asked if you could complete one sentence.

My stitching resolution for 2021 is____________________.

I couldn't resist.

My stitching resolution for 2021 is to baste the quilts within a week of completing a flimsy.

This is my first time joining PHD's and I feel like I'm cheating.  Here is my list.

Most of these just need to be quilted.  If you have read many of my posts you know that basting is my least favorite part of the process.

#1,2 and 3 are memory quilts made from a friend's dad's clothes for her children.  #1 is basted and the other two are bundled with batting and backing.

#3 and 4 are also memory quilts made from a friend's dad's clothes.  The first one is being chain pieced.

The other has been cut.

#6 has been basted.  I didn't even remember basting it.

#7 has been partially quilted.

#8 and 9 are bundled with batting and backing.

#10, 11 and 12 have the backing chosen.

And here they are in all their glory.  I believe I have my work cut out for me.

The sad thing is this is not the entire flimsy inventory.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

With time to spare

I have accomplished my OMG with time to spare.

I wasn't sure I would make this goal, but with persistence and determination I did and won't have to spend Thanksgiving weekend doing it.

80 x 100

If you've read previous posts you know this is my oldest UFO.  I saw this quilt pattern in American Patchwork and Quilting April 2009.  As I had a granddaughter that was just a year old I thought wouldn't this look great on a little girl's bed?

Long story short, they lived in a 2 bedroom townhouse with 3 kids and that little girl slept on a crib mattress on the floor in momma and daddy's bedroom until she was 9. When they bought a new house she got a double bed and this wasn't big enough.  She got a special quilt, it just wasn't this one.

So this got shuffled from one pile/shelf to another waiting to be basted.  Basting is my least favorite part of quilting. (I have at least 7 more waiting for that)  I was determined this was going to be the next quilt finished.  I have no plans for it at this time.  It may be prime for Hands2Help in the spring.

Here are some closeups of the the quilting.

I hung it upside down so the feathers are headed south.  I'm thinking this will be my last quilt this big without a predetermined purpose.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

One Monthly Goal

My One Monthly Goal is to finish the oldest UFO in my stash.  It was pieced in 2009 and has just been shifted from one place to another for all these years.

I finally got it basted.  That is my least favorite part of quilting.  It is 2/3 quilted.  My goal is to finish quilting and bound during November.

I have recently discovered Quilter's Select Fuse Free Powder.  I can't wait to try it.  I am currently a spray baster.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

Once Again, It's Been a While

I want to sew sew bad!!!!

I've been working on my oldest UFO.  I'm about 2/3 finished with the quilting.

Wednesday night or rather the wee hours of the morning Thursday a category 1 hurricane named Zeta came through central Alabama.  Yes, I said a CAT 1 and Central Alabama.  We lost power at 1:17 am.  Thursday evening my MIL (also without power) was having chest pains so the ambulance took her to the hospital.  I waited two hours in my car in the parking lot while she waited on a stretcher in the hall.  When I called the ER after the second hour I was told they had put her in a room and to call back in another hour.  I drove the hour home to arrive at a still dark home.  Even sleeping under a nice quilt it got chilly.  Friday night was to be colder.

If you read my last post you will know that we are thanking God for having the trees in our yard cut a little over a month ago.  We had several friends with trees through their homes.  Although none of the trees I've seen down were pines.  All hardwood trees.  We are still so thankful.

On Friday morning DH and I found a hotel room in anticipation of his mother being discharged.  My mistake was that I only booked the room for one night.  His mother was not discharged that day.  The next morning we were told the hotel was completely full for the next night and we couldn't stay.  Still no power we went on the hunt for another room.  Five hotels later we got on the interstate to go to the next exit to see if there was a room there.  Just as we approached the next exit my MIL's neighbor called to let us know their power was on.  We went home for a while so I could clean out my freezers and refrigerator including about 40 lbs of venison. I went to the sewing room wishing I could stitch something.  I came so close to pulling Florence out.

I stood and looked at her for some time.  But I really needed to go clean out my MIL's freezer too.  So DH and I packed some clothes and moved to her house.  She still was not discharged.  They found that she has c. diff which can be really bad and she's almost 90.

Today I went to the grocery store, there was a package of chicken and one of pork chops that were thawed but still cold so I decided that I could cook them today and tomorrow.  Still anticipating that she would come home to a good home cooked meal.  Not to happen today.  I told DH that if I were to start cooking dinner the neighbor would call and tell us that our power was on.  I didn't even have the mushrooms sliced when the call came.  I packed up her pan with a few of the ingredients in it and brought it home to finish dinner.

Nothing like your own chair and your own bed.

I'm not sure when I will get to sew sew I will continue to look forward to that time.

Wishing you more sewing time than I will have.

It's been a while

I haven't posted in a while.  Sorry, if you're intersted.

So this month I joined lillyella for a Mini Maker Case SAL.  I'm a little ahead of schedule as I completed mine today.

I'm not up on hand stitching but I followed the directions and hand stitched the bias binding on the exposed seams on the inside.

It's meant for an Oliso miini iron, which I hope to win.  Not holding my breath but a girl can hope. Can't she?  My little mini fits in it just fine.

Here it is closed.  I ordered a fat quarter bundle of this fabric and have been hoarding saving it for something special.  I think it was perfect for this because it doesn't matter what color the Oliso iron that I win.  They will all coordinate.

Part of the reason I haven't posted in a while is because we have been doing some home improvements.

Well we've been spending money.

20 pine trees, one mimosa and one sweetgum later this is what it looks like.  They delivered 3 loads of top soil today.  And I have to go pick up 110 lbs of grass seed on Saturday.

Another reason I haven't been posting is that I am working from home every other week and I may have made a mistake by setting up my "office" in the sewing room.  When I clock out at 4:00 I am ready to be somewhere else.  I'm trying to do better.

Wishing you more stitching time than I will have.

Money Wasted?

I purchased an AccuQuilt Go a year ago.  It came with the 2.5" strip die and I purchased a multi 2.5" square die.  I cut a few strips and I cut a few squares then put it away.  I can cut them faster with my ruler I told myself.  I feel like I wasted my money I said.

Last month I decided I really needed to give it a go, give it a fair assessment and make one of the quilts in the Eleanor Burns book that came with the Go.  I found this really cute Sail Boat Baby Boy quilt.  That's the one!

I opened the 8" Cube that also came with it and started unwrapping the dies (a year after purchase).  I cut the half square triangles for the sails (I like making 2 at a time HST).  I cut the bottom of the boat and the HST for the ends (I prefer stitch and flip).  BUT when I got to the water under the boat and the instructions wanted me to cut 2 4.5" strips and SEW THEM TOGETHER to make the 8" water!?!?  I said nope, not, nada.

I scrapped the whole thing and got my ruler and rotary cutter out and started over.  And it took me no time.  It will take me longer to get it basted (my least favorite part of quilting) than it took me to put it together.

Yes, I feel like I've wasted my money.  It isn't the first time and it probably won't be the last.  But this was kind of an expensive mistake.

I may try it on my scraps before I decide to have a grand giveaway.

And here is the finished quilt all washed and crinkly.

OMG July 2020 Completed

I did it!!!
I managed to complete my one monthly goal while still being able to spend time with my son and granddaughter before they move 13 hours away to Kansas.

I saw this quilt on the wall at the LQS during the holiday season of 2018.
Now I just have to figure out how to quilt it.  And if Matilda, my Sweet Sixteen, will behave herself and not skip stitches and break thread.  I'm going to guess this quilt top will go in the stack with all of the others.

I need to have a basting marathon but that is my least favorite part of quilting.

Now on to why I kind of picked an easily reachable goal.

This little thing thinks she is grown at 7 years old.

We all had dinner with my DD and her family last night for a going away.  And can you believe we didn't take the first picture of the whole family together.
WHY CAN'T I REMEMBER TO DO THAT!!!

She has been her daddy's world for 7 years and now not only does he have a new wife, she has 5 children.
Lump is excited about all of the changes and she will still be an only child every other week while the other kids go to their dads.

After 4 years living with us it's going to be a sad day.
I'm going to miss them so much.

Wishing you more sewing time than I will have.

QR Code

I started this several months ago.  I created the QR code that will take you to my blog and then started cutting black and white fabric.  This was quite the undertaking as these are 1" finished sections.

This was set aside while I worked on other things.  My son pushed me to pull it back out and finish it.  Then it sat in the to be quilted pile.

My HQ Sweet Sixteen has been having problems so I have put off quilting anything since April. There is a "picking" sound usually right before it skips stitches and the thread breaks.  But it only happens when going backwards (moving the quilt from left to right or toward me).

I decided to insert a bigger needle and try it again.  I chose this quilt to try it out on because I know this one isn't going to get used and washed often.  It didn't do too bad although I did hear the "picking" sound several times.  But it didn't skip stitches and the thread didn't break.  YAY!!!

This quilt was a fun experiment.

I created a QR code to our Humane Society's web site to make one the same size as this one so they could display it at their fund raisers.  I also created one to a blog post "How to create a QR code quilt" which was going to be a lap sized quilt.  I'm not sure that one is going to happen.  I may make the one for the Humane Society but I'm not sure.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

I feel so dumb

OMG!!!! and I don't mean One Monthly Goal.  I have spent the last 3, yes three, hours trying to figure out how to get the tabs at the top of this page.  And with persistence and determination I finally did it.

Now I just have to get the UFO/WIP list completed.

WOW!

OMG is No. 4

I rolled the dice to find out what my OMG would be.  Number 4!

This is my process most of the time.  The top 6 UFOs are stored in these tubs.

And the coordinating instructions are stored on the shelf below.

Number 4 is the Christmas quilt.

My goal is to get the sashing and borders on.  This should be a doable goal while still spending time with my son and granddaughter before they move.

This pattern is Merry Meets Modern by Lavender Lime.  It was supposed to be a block of the month with a coworker and friend.  The coworker didn't want to do the applique blocks and the friend didn't even get started.  Oh well, their loss.

Didn't make it - OMG

I joined OMG this month for the first time.  A few days later I found out that Lump and her dad, after living with us since she was 3, are moving 13 hours away to Kansas.  So I decided spending time with them until they go was more important than meeting the goal this month.

I did get some of the blocks completed.  They are really fun blocks to make.  And a nice size at 15".  I am making the HST on my old faithful 40 year old Kenmore (my workhorse named Matilda) and all of the other piecing is being done on my newly purchased Featherweight named Gladys.

I will continue working on it this week while Lump spends the week with her mamma while her daddy is in Kansas interviewing for jobs.  It's also a work at home week.

Also, while helping me "work at home" Lump found a tub of old scraps and started laying them out on the floor and clipping them together with wonder clips. I told her she could put them on the design wall and this is what she came up with.

Some of this fabric wasn't fit for quilting but I let her have her fun.  At the end of the week I told her that I would try to get them sewn together while she was spending the weekend with her mother.  I had to replace the "not for quilting" fabric.  I don't think it turned out too bad.  In her eyes it is exactly as she had it on the wall and she loves it.

I pin basted, which I don't usually do.  I quilted a meander with a heart around each pin.

I labeled it.

And here she is with her quilt.

I'm gonna miss her.  And her daddy too.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

OMG - June 2020

I'm linking with OMG for the first time.

I hope to turn this fat quarter bundle into the quilt in the picture this month.

It's called Dashing Duos from American Patchwork and Quilting, August 2019.

Wish me luck!!!

Working from home....

After the first three weeks at home we started alternating a week in the office and a week at home (now with laptops and headsets).  I am limited at what I can accomplish from home to answering and processing emails and answering the phone.  That leaves a lot of sewing time since I set up my "home office" in the sewing room.  I wear the headset while sewing and when the phone rings I answer and I check the email about once an hour or so, process them and get back to sewing.

I was at home one week and my MIL had to have surgery, then she spent the next week in the hospital with a blood clot.  My super supervisor allowed me to work from home the second week in a row because I commute to work is 40 minutes in the opposite direction from the hospital where my MIL was (in case I was needed).  Then another week at home because it was my week.

I started this quilt on Sunday while sitting with my MIL at her home and finished it on Thursday while working from home.

It was made with a layer cake and some white fabric.  I did order some yardage of a coordinating fabric that was striped to use for the border and I have some small stripe fabric, also coordinating that I will use for the binding.

I've been quilting for many years but I have never tried a mitered border until now.  I quite impressed myself.  Check it out.

If you zoom way in you can see the seam in the beige w/flower stripe.

And then there's this.....

For some reason every time the toilet paper runs out my 7 year old granddaughter creates this instead of just putting the toilet paper on the roll.

The first time she did it I told her the toilet was in time out because I caught it smoking.  And that she would have to use another bathroom for a while.

What's a grandmother to do?????

This is going to be another work from home week.  Although Wednesday is deadline day so the phones will be busy on Tuesday and Wednesday.  I still plan to start a quilt or maybe two.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

Not Exactly Stay at Home

Actually last week was week three.  I finished the graduation quilt for a friend's granddaughter.  I have posted about it previously.  Well now it's finished.

It's hard to get a good picture of a quilt this big when you're by yourself.  These are 24" blocks.

I also made 2 sew together bags last week. One for my friends birthday which is May 2nd and the other for the Humane Society to use as a prize for their annual Bow Wow Bingo which has been postponed.

So this week I had to go to the office on Monday and Tuesday and they sent me home with a laptop and a headset.  My job is to check and print the emails and answer calls.  I set up my "home office" in the sewing room.  Last Thursday I rolled the dice and the Christmas Quilt was the roll of the week.  Sew after emails were all caught up and in between calls I worked it. The Christmas Quilt that was supposed to be a block of the month with a coworker.  She backed out on me.  Now all of the blocks are finished.

Not the greatest picture, the afternoon sun shines on my design wall.  This week the dice rolled the alternate quilt for my sister because the original is SSSOOOO busy.  I plan to give her the choice between the two.

I'm back in the "home office" tomorrow.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

Week Two of Stay at Home

Week two of staying at home was not quite as productive as last week.

It is that time of the year again so strawberry jam was in order.

Two batches on Saturday and one on Sunday.  All was going well until......

I always set the fresh filled jars upside down.  Don't ask why, I just always have.  I was turning them right side up and this was the last one.  Over 40 years of making strawberry jam and this is a first.

I know my stove needed cleaning but really?  Do you see the vent?  Yeah, what a mess.

While I was cleaning up I got a very small (microscopic but enough to bleed a little) cut on my finger and I still kept wanting to lick my fingers.

On the quilting front, I did finish a flimsy.  I'm calling it Bad Choices because I didn't make the best fabric choices.

This is for my sister.  It's one from the Midnight Quilt Show with Angela Walters.  Bad Choices was because this quilt is REAL busy.  I tried toning it down some without much success.

I made a few masks including one for DH.  He's a real estate appraiser and the mortgage companies expect him to continue doing his job.

I contacted his mother who is 89 and asked her if she would like me to make one of these for her.  Her comment was "could you make some improvements".   I asked her what improvements and she said more colorful.  I've been making them more colorful but I didn't think DH would wear flowers.  I'm pleasantly surprised he even will wear gloves or this mask.

Well that's about it here.  I do have to work next Monday and Tuesday.  And then go back the following week.  So far.

Wishing you more quilting time than I will have.

Stay safe and healthy.
